In 2019, the Spanish Grand Prix coincided with the 25th anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s passing. Circuit de Catalunya entrusted us with the task of honoring the legacy of the greatest driver in Formula 1 history. Ayrton Senna tragically lost his life on May 1, 1994, in Imola, during what is remembered as F1’s darkest weekend. Following the accident, an Austrian flag was found in his pocket—Senna had intended to pay tribute to his friend and fellow driver Roland Ratzenberger, who had passed away the day before during qualifying.

To fulfill Senna’s final wish, we created a unique half-Austrian, half-Brazilian flag as a symbol of remembrance. Fans and drivers filled the circuit with these flags, culminating in a powerful global tribute. The commemorative flag was proudly displayed atop the podium at the end of the race, ensuring Senna’s wish to honor Roland was realized.

Thanks to the hundreds of thousands of tweets, the commemorative flag was raised atop the Circuit de Catalunya and the podium. Together, we united to make Ayrton Senna’s dream a reality.
